On October 29th, 1923, the Turkish constitution was amended to became a republic. The national day commemorates the proclamation of the Turkish republic.

Following the Ottomans' loss in World War I, the allies took over Turkiye as part of the Ottoman Empire's division.

The Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923) began with a nationalist rebellion. In July 1923, the allies left Turkish areas.

Mustafa Kemal, the leader of the Turkish Army, was named the country's first president on 29 October 1923, when the First National Assembly declared Türkiye a republic in the new capital, Ankara, at the First National Assembly of Türkiye Building.

In 1934, Kemal was awarded the title Atatürk, which translates to 'Father of the Turks'.

The subsequent April saw the adoption of a republican constitution. Islam remained the national religion for several years before being removed from the constitution in April 1928, making Turkey a secular state. Turkey had a single-party administration until 1945.

Republic Day is one of the most important national holidays in Turkey, representing national unity, solidarity, and social solidarity. It was critical to establish a new style of administration in order to eliminate the administrative vacuum that occurred following the Turkish nation's triumph in the War of Independence.
