The holiday honours the establishment of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which laid the foundation for the nation’s political independence, governance, and civil rights following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

The origins of this day go back to the early 1990s, when Uzbekistan, like many former Soviet republics, sought to redefine its political identity. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Uzbek government began drafting a new constitution to replace the 1937 constitution of the Uzbek SSR. Over two years, the Constitutional Commission worked to create a framework that would reflect the nation’s independence and aspirations for stability, equality, and prosperity.

On 8 December 1992, the new Constitution was formally adopted at the 11th session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The document established a presidential republic, guaranteed fundamental rights and freedoms, and set out the separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. It also enshrined principles of national unity, social justice, and respect for human dignity.

Since then, Constitution Day has been more than a legal commemoration — it serves as a reminder of Uzbekistan’s sovereignty and civic responsibility. Each year, citizens celebrate the day by reflecting on the nation’s progress and reaffirming their commitment to uphold the values embodied in the Constitution. It remains a cornerstone of Uzbekistan’s national identity and its enduring pursuit of peace, stability, and democratic governance.
