The U.S. Navy plans to use Northrop Grumman’s future 57mm guided high explosive ammunition with the Mk110 Naval Gun Mount. The company will test and mature new ammunition for qualification.
The 57mm guided ammunition with a high explosive warhead can manoeuvre in-flight as it moves towards a target. The guided 57mm ammunition features an onboard seeker to acquire moving targets and a fuse with the ability to self-select for either proximity or point-detonation mode to engage best and defeat the intended target.
The 57mm round, which employs seekers and an aft-manoeuvre system, provides continuous trajectory guidance regardless of how frequently the target pivots. The new ammunition requires no weapon system modifications while increasing stand-off range and is a cost-effective solution against small, fast-moving threats.
