Demir reminded that Turkish Aerospace (TUSAŞ) MALE class UAV ANKA could carry Şimşek target drone under the wing. Demir said that the Şimşek drone might act like an air-to-surface cruise missile.
Demir’s words confirm TUSAŞ President and CEO Temel Kotil’s announcement about the Şimşek Target drone. Kotil had spoken to a television channel in April and had said that “Target drone (Şimşek) is a loitering munition at the same time. Its warhead has a five kg explosive. It can fly more than 100 km. We can produce 100 drones per year.”
Şimşek is originally designed as a target drone for air defence purposes. Şimşek is usually launched from the ground station, but it was seen under the wings of ANKA UAV. It was speculated that Şimşek was transformed into a loitering munition. The claim was confirmed. Anka may carry two Şimşek at the same time.
