Germany Tests Renewed Skyranger 35 Air Defence System

German Rheinmetall has tested the new version of the Skyranger 35 gun-based air defence system on a Leopard 1 MBT chassis.

X account OSINTtechnical shared the image of the 35 mm SPAAG's firing test, with the Leopard 1 hull visible.

Skyranger 35 is a part of the Skyranger SPAAG family, using a 35 mm revolver cannon. The cannon has built-in programmers for the AHEAD airburst ammunition and has a 1000 RPM rate of fire.

The turret also includes four S-band AESA searching radars for constant hemispherical scanning. It is stated that these radars can track small UAVs at a range of five kilometres, while this goes up to 20 kilometres for fighter-sized targets. A tracking radar with optics is present for engagement.

This version of Skyranger 35 onboard the Leopard 1 MBT chassis was previously seen in the Eurosatory 2024 defence exhibition. This configuration might be a move for export to countries to retire their Leopard 1MBTs or a solution for Ukraine, as the supply of Skyranger-series SPAAG is on the table.

Alongside Skyranger 35, Skyranger 30, with a 30x173 mm revolver cannon capable of firing AHEAD ammunition, has been developed with the same sensor suite. The smaller calibre revolver cannon has a higher rate of fire at 1200 RPM.
