US approves Germany’s $1.23bn AIM-120D-3 purchase, covering 400 units, guidance kits, test vehicle, spares and RTX support. Deal awaits Congress review.

Germany has secured approval from the US State Department for the potential purchase of AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and related equipment worth an estimated $1.23 billion. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has formally notified Congress of the proposed sale, which still requires legislative clearance.

The German request includes up to 400 AIM-120D-3 missiles, 12 AMRAAM guidance sections with advanced positioning modules, and a single AIM-120 test vehicle. The package also covers telemetry kits, control sections, containers, support equipment, encryption devices, spare parts, publications, software, training and full logistics support. RTX Corporation, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, has been named the principal contractor for the programme. Should Congress approve, the sale will significantly strengthen Germany’s air defence and interoperability within NATO, providing the Luftwaffe with the latest variant of the AMRAAM system.
