MPT-68 Signals MKE’s Transition to 6.8x51 mm Calibre

MPT-68 Signals MKE’s Transition to 6.8x51 mm Calibre TurDef MPT-68 New Generation Battle Rifle

MKE displayed the MPT-68 chambered in 6.8x51 mm as a possible follow-up to MPT-76 in use by various Turkish service branches, at EFES 2026’s exhibition.

MKE has declared its intention to join the 6.8x51 mm club with the MPT-68 battle rifle, adopting an identical exterior to the MPT-76 but using the new ammunition that is envisioned as a successor to the widespread 7.62x51 mm.

Compared to 7.62x51 mm, 6.8x51 mm ammunition (.277 Fury) has a considerably higher operating chamber pressure at 80000 psi (7.62x51 mm is rated at roughly 50000 psi), which has been allowed by hybrid case ammunition that couples a steel rear end with a brass body.

The higher chamber pressure naturally allows for higher velocity and by result, muzzle energy; both of which contribute to effective range, penetration, and lethality.

Considering this, MPT-68 is understood to have a reinforced firing mechanism to withstand the higher operating pressure of the 6.8x51 mm ammunition. Taming the weight increase associated with this reinforcement can be said to lead towards a challenge of metallurgy.

Like Home for an Army Sticking to Battle Rifles

SIG’s M7 battle rifle, the first operational example to use this new generation round, has received criticism, mainly stemming from the fact that it forces a new form of firefight on the US Army infantry. M7, as a battle rifle, promotes tactics based on longer range and higher power; while the legacy M4 advocates for capacity and easy handling in tight spaces.

However, Turkish infantry have long been using battle rifles as the main service rifle due to differences in approach stemming from operational and geographical factors (Anticipation of army-versus-army and the mountainous areas). This tradition in the modern sense began with the German H&K’s G3 line and has carried on with MKE’s MPT-76 succeeding it.

MPT-68 adopting common ergonomics with MPT-76 and going further with the advantages of a full power round would likely feel like home for the Turkish Army in the simplest terms considering the background.

If 6.8x51 mm is well-received by the Turkish Army, MPT-68 might pave the way for other adaptations of MKE's firearms such as PMT machine gun, MMT squad machine gun, JNG-90 sniper rifle, and KNT-76 marksman rifle (Which shares most of the components with MPT-76, making it smoother for a "KNT-68" transition).
