The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has ordered two more Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) planes. This brings the total number of planes in the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) to 12.
The order coincides with Sweden and Denmark officially joining the MMF, expanding the programme’s membership and reinforcing European strategic autonomy.
MMF is funded by the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Norway, Belgium and the Czech Republic, and grants exclusive pooled operational rights to participating nations. The aircraft are NATO-owned and operated under a shared framework that enhances interoperability and cost efficiency.
Airbus Head of Air Power Jean-Brice Dumont said the expansion underlines Europe’s commitment to collective defence. “Airbus is proud to support this initiative with A330 MRTTs produced and converted at our Toulouse and Getafe facilities,” he said.
It is certified for automatic boom refuelling and can also be configured for medical evacuation missions. With over 325,000 operational hours, the MRTT holds 90 per cent of the new-generation tanker market outside the US, with 84 aircraft ordered by 17 customers.
