Poland is expected to buy an extra 180 K2 Black Panther tanks from South Korea in a $6.2 billion contract to reinforce its military modernisation initiatives.
As geopolitical issues still affect Eastern Europe, Poland funds military capability to ensure its preparedness for future threats.
To forward its military modernising initiatives, Poland is discussing the acquisition of another 180 K2 Black Panther main battle tank from the Republic of Korea. Worth around $6.2 billion, the pact aims to upgrade Poland's military forces given growing regional security concerns.
Under a first deal signed in July 2022, this acquisition consists of 48 FA-50 light combat aircraft, 180 K2 tanks, and 212 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers. In August 2022, Poland purchased the first batch of K2 tanks under a $3.37 billion contract; delivery is underway. By December 2024, Poland had acquired 77 K2 tanks, thereby bolstering its armed divisions.
According to local media, conflicts between the Polish government and a local military industry caused delays in negotiations for the extra 180 K2 tanks.
Still, following a bilateral session in Warsaw, Poland and the Republic of Korea committed to expediting the finalisation of the deal. Talks acquired speed during an October 2024 conference between ROK President Yoon Suk Yeol and Polish President Andrzej Duda, in which both officials promised to revoke the agreement by the end of the year.
