US Army Awards FN a Contract for the PGS Programme TurDef

The US Army has awarded FN a PPON contract valued at $2 million for further development of its MTL-30 new generation grenade launcher using 30 mm rounds.

With the Prototype Project Opportunity Notice (PPON) contract, FN has officially become a contender in the bid for the Precision Grenadier System (PGS) programme, which aims to develop a new generation of extended-range grenade launchers with new ammunition types.

FN’s mag-fed MTL-30 chambered in 30 mm medium-velocity grenades with a flatter trajectory and higher velocity compared to the 40 mm grenades of the revolving MGL-40 offers a compact package and familiar interface.

The launcher’s layout in terms of ergonomics and controls is reminiscent of AR-pattern rifles like the M4. Two magazine options are available as three-round and five-round.

PGS Programme Aims for Versatility and Longer Reach

The outlines of the Army’s PGS programme, which draws parallels with the cancelled XM25 25 mm grenade launcher, aim for grenade launchers that can reach longer ranges, hit more accurately, and affect a wider variety of targets.

When all other competitors like Barrett’s MARS are inspected alongside FN’s submission, all share features like grenades of smaller calibre, smart optics to help with aiming, and a diverse range of ammunition types, which include HE, HEDP, canister, and airburst.

Engagements at longer range, on the enemy behind cover, and even UAVs are at the forefront of capabilities. Additionally, the new grenade launchers can be observed as having a lighter construction for better mobility (The prototypes weigh approximately 4.5 kg, compared to the cancelled XM25’s 6.35 kg empty weight).

Simpler and lighter designs with smaller calibre can help with concluding that the US Army is looking towards not necessarily more lethality per round but deliverance at longer ranges with more chances of hit for the future of its dedicated grenadiers.
