Airbus [ENV:Airbus SE] is modifying two XQ-58A Valkyrie UCAV from the US-based Kratos in preparation for European standards by fitting them with the MARS mission system.
In response to Germany’s search for a loyal wingman, Kratos and Airbus have teamed up for the modification and demonstration of the XQ-58A Valkyrie with the Multiplatform Autonomous Reconfigurable and Secure (MARS) mission system.
Head of Key Account Germany at Airbus Defence and Space, Marco Gumbrecht, stated that a modified XQ-58A was selected to ensure rapid delivery instead of an entirely new platform.
It is likely that XQ-58A, modified for European use, is meant as a large-sized remote carrier for munitions, sensors, and electronic warfare systems for easy deployability. Airbus previously presented its own concept for the currently troubled FCAS programme with airborne deployment from cargo aircraft in mind.
XQ-58A stands out from UCAVs of similar size with its use of RATO for takeoff and parachute for landing. However, runway takeoff has also been made possible, as demonstrated earlier with a detachable trolley. Additionally, Kratos has begun the development of an integrated landing gear to answer different customer requirements.
The UCAV can carry various munitions with a capacity of about 1200 lbs (Shared equally by external hardpoints and internal bays). Internal weapon bays were demonstrated with the launch of Altius-600 loitering munitions.
