Austria has begun negotiations to purchase 12 M-346FA Light Combat Aircraft from Italy to modernise its air force by replacing retired 40 Saab 105 aircraft.

Austria will supply the aircraft to replace the retired 40 Saab 105 aircraft as part of its plans to modernise its air force. In this context, Austria has begun negotiations with Italy to purchase 12 M-346FA light fighter jets in a deal worth 1 billion Euros.

The Austrian Ministry of Defense confirmed the ongoing talks with the Italian government, and it was reported that both parties aim to finalise the agreement.

The M-346FA is a Light Combat Aircraft derived from Leonardo's M-346 advanced trainer aircraft based in Italy. The aircraft is designed with multi-role capabilities, including close air support missions, battlespace air interdiction for national defence and tactical reconnaissance.

Austria plans to use the M-346FA aircraft primarily for pilot training, support of ground forces, and to increase air defence capabilities.
