Eurofighter With ECRS Mk2 Radar Makes Maiden Flight

Captor-E AESA radar's new version, ECRS Mk2, has made its first flight onboard the Eurofighter Typhoon.

BAE Systems has announced the first flight of ECRS Mk2 to be used onboard Royal Air Force's new batch of Eurofighters. The flight test was performed with a fighter reserved for test and evaluation.

ECRS Mk2 features upgrades in electronic warfare capabilities, allowing for the jamming of enemy radars. The Royal Air Force intends the new radar to help with the SEAD/DEAD missions of its new Eurofighters.

Captor-E ECRS Mk2, like the baseline Captor-E, features a mechanical steering system, allowing for high-off boresight tracking and engagement of targets. This prevents the loss of action in the event of evasion manoeuvres.

Alongside ECRS Mk2, Tranche 5 or T5 upgrade is being worked on with new generation munitions and MUM-T capability. During ILA 2024 in Germany, Eurofighter Tranche 5 was presented with a remote carrier UAV that can carry jammer, sensor, or explosive payloads to carry out different ways of support.
