Geran-2 Kamikaze UAV Drops FPV UAV for Secondary Strikes TurDef

A Russian Geran-2 kamikaze UAV was spotted dropping a small FPV kamikaze UAV, potentially to strike opportunity targets along its way by Ukrainian forces.

A new payload option for Russia’s long-range workhorse Geran kamikaze UAVs has been spotted in the field, after the clear spotting of air-to-air missile integration.

Geran’s new payload could be regarded as a self-defence against anti-air weaponry such as gun or missile emplacements spotted along the way. In contrast, air-to-air missiles previously spotted by interceptor UAVs work as self-defence against aircraft.

At the same time, this means that Geran can also carry other types of smaller kamikaze UAVs and act as a communications relay. This partially circumvents the recent blockage on Russia for the use of Starlink antennas on UAVs, which has extended to smaller UAVs after the installation on Geran itself. Thus, it would not be a surprise to see Geran UAVs configured to act as disposable relays with long endurance for extended-range attacks with smaller kamikaze UAVs.
