GÜRZ Air Defence System Comes in Two Configurations

ASELSAN’s activity report for 2024 includes the development of the GÜRZ gun/missile hybrid air defence system in two configurations: GÜRZ 200 and GÜRZ 140.

According to the annual report, GÜRZ 200 and GÜRZ 140 will be developed as two different configurations of the hybrid air defence system under the Multi-Purpose Point Air Defence System programme.

GÜRZ 200 is shown as the truck-mounted version of the system, which was first unveiled officially during IDEF’23.

As to what GÜRZ 140 might look like, a hint was previously spotted on ASELSAN’s website. Concept drawing of a hybrid air defence system with an identical configuration to GÜRZ 200, mounted on an 8x8 armoured vehicle similar to PARS ALPHA 8x8, was seen briefly. Differently from GÜRZ 200, this concept has smaller AESA radars and another quad set of MANPADS in place of GÖKSUR air defence missiles.

Additionally, a GÜRZ variant with a water-down on some capabilities for enhanced mobility onboard armoured vehicles would strategically make more sense than another truck-mounted configuration. If GÜRZ 140 indeed turns out to be an armoured vehicle-mounted variant, it can be considered a higher-end alternative to the KORKUT 35 mm SPAAG family with all-aspect search and air defence missiles in addition to a 35 mm revolver cannon.

GÜRZ as a Turkish Approach to Hybrid Air Defence Systems

GÜRZ, unveiled in 2023, is the first air defence system developed in Turkiye to combine gun and missile systems. GÜRZ 200, the baseline variant, has three types of effectors for different ranges of engagement.

The short-range option is a single 35 mm revolver cannon capable of firing ATOM 35 ABM ammunition against UAVs and x-to-surface missiles. For ranges up to 8 km, SUNGUR or other MANPADS missiles are used against low-flying aircraft. Against higher-end threats at ranges up to 15 km, the GÖKSUR missile, based on BOZDOĞAN WVRAAM, with a high kinematic performance and an IIR seeker, is present. Additionally, there appears to be a KANGAL jammer against small UAVs as a soft-kill solution in the latest presentations.

Sensor suite of GÜRZ consists of four AESA radars providing 360-degree detection/tracking coverage and the AKREP 100-G fire control radar/electro-optical system.
