The German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) is ready to receive the first batch of 62 units ordered for Airbus Helicopters H145M Light Attack Helicopter (LAH) program. Last December 2024, a major milestone was reached with a formal order for 62 H145Ms under the LAH with 20 additional options.
The replacement of the Tiger helicopter (EC665) is indicating a new term in German Armed Forces. This rotor blade is based on commercial H145, and Airbus developed it to offer as a cost-effective solution to the countries with budget constraints.
According to the “Bulgarian Military”, the main reason lies in the constant technical problems with the Tiger, which led to low operational readiness. Despite ongoing maintenance efforts, the German Ministry of Defence noted these challenges persist, prompting the decision to retire the Tigers by 2032.
The civilian helicopter H145 has a large logistic support with high flight hours. The new fleet will be fully equipped with the HForce weapon system. This technology will transform helicopters into versatile combat platforms, capable of deploying rockets, laser-guided missiles, cannons and machine guns.
The H145M can be armed with a 12.7mm or 7.62mm machine gun on an external weapon station, as well as the integration of air-to-ground missiles such as the AGM-114 Hellfire or laser-guided rockets for precision strikes.
Ranging from light attack roles with guided weapons to special operations involving the transport of special forces or cargo transport. Its adaptability is a significant advantage for the German Armed Forces, offering considerable operational flexibility and cost-effectiveness.
