During IDEF25 defence exhibition, STM displayed KERKES image-based navigation system on various UAV platforms to allow navigation in GNSS-denied environments.
STM is displaying the KERKES image-based navigation onboard its Togan and Boyga multi-copter UAVs to allow operations in GNSS-denied environments. The KERKES module can be mounted alongside standard payloads like optics and munitions.
Image-based navigation uses algorithms utilising feed from optics to predict the location without needing GNSS. Thus, this method can not be jammed. However, developing such navigation capabilities requires a considerable effort to develop algorithms precise enough to act as a substitute for GNSS in the event of jamming or signal loss.
