Ukraine Tests Catamaran USV with Flatbed as an UAV Mothership TurDef

A new Ukrainian USV in catamaran configuration with a wide flatbed was tested with Powerus’ Guardian-1 interceptor UAVs launched from launch/storage boxes.

Powerus Founder Brett Velicovich announced the test of the US-based firm’s Guardian interceptor UAV from a new type of Ukrainian USV using a catamaran layout to increase the available area for payloads.

The new Ukrainian USV’s configuration sports a flatbed that can potentially accommodate a larger number of UAV launch boxes/canisters compared to monohull designs. It is seen that six boxes were placed, but it is possible that this number can reach nine boxes, considering the free space.

Previously, Ukraine fitted interceptor UAVs on its existing USVs for midcourse defence from the shoreline, as well as FPVs carried in box launch units that double as storage.

USVs fitted with interceptor UAVs or other effectors like laser-guided rockets have promise as a new layer in the defence against the everyday kamikaze UAV volleys, as Ukraine, not possessing a warship with extensive air defence coverage, leaves a gap for the long-range kamikaze UAVs that can follow the shoreline to attack the mainland. While limited in range, the USVs can be put out rapidly in larger numbers and form a defensive grid to trap low-flying enemy aircraft or kamikaze UAVs.

The main idea already proved itself with shoot-downs of Russian helicopters and combat aircraft using IR-guided missiles not long ago.
