Airbus has delivered the first A400M to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, marking a milestone in the country’s airlift modernisation and expanding the Air Force’s strategic reach across the archipelago.

Airbus Defence and Space has officially delivered Indonesia’s first A400M military transport aircraft to the Ministry of Defence, strengthening the country’s heavy airlift capability. Operated by the Indonesian Air Force, the aircraft was handed over following a ceremony at Halim Air Force Base, after completion of formal transfer at Airbus’s Seville facility in Spain.

This is the first of two A400Ms ordered by Indonesia in 2021, with the second scheduled for delivery in 2026. The addition makes Indonesia the tenth global operator of the A400M platform. “This delivery is a strong demonstration of the trust placed in the aircraft’s multi-role capabilities and suitability for operations in diverse and challenging environments,” said Karl-Heinz Grossman, Head of International at Airbus Defence and Space.

The A400M delivered to Indonesia is configured for cargo, troop transport, medical evacuation, and humanitarian relief missions. With a maximum payload of 37 tonnes, it can carry vehicles, helicopters, or large supplies. In a typical 30-tonne mission profile, the A400M can cover 2,400 nautical miles—enough to span the Indonesian archipelago.

Airbus will also provide training and support packages to facilitate entry into service. The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that Indonesia is studying integration of the new modular firefighting kit on both A400Ms. The roll-on/roll-off system allows conversion into a water bomber capable of releasing up to 20,000 litres in one pass, a significant asset against wildfires in remote regions.
