Italy Orders 17 New Leonardo AW249 Attack Helicopters TurDef

Italy has officially placed an order for 17 Leonardo AW249 attack helicopters as part of its ongoing efforts to modernise its rotary-wing combat fleet.

The new helicopters will replace the ageing A129 Mangusta, which has been in service with the Italian Army since the 1990s.

The procurement is part of a broader initiative to enhance Italy’s aerial firepower and operational capabilities. The contract includes a budget allocation covering not only the production of the helicopters but also logistics and support systems. The first deliveries are expected to begin in 2027.

The AW249 is designed to deliver superior performance, survivability, and versatility compared to its predecessor. It is equipped with a 20 mm three-barrel TM197B cannon developed by OTO Melara and will be capable of deploying Israeli-made Spike anti-tank missiles. This armament significantly enhances its ability to engage heavily armoured targets.

Additionally, the helicopter features advanced avionics, improved digital interfaces, and enhanced protection against modern battlefield threats. It is expected to operate in a variety of mission profiles, including close air support, reconnaissance, and air interdiction.

Leonardo has so far produced one prototype and three pre-production units of the AW249. These aircraft are currently undergoing extensive testing in collaboration with the Italian Army. The pre-production models will serve primarily for evaluation and integration trials, ensuring that the final production units meet operational requirements.

Since November 2023, multiple trials have been conducted to assess the AW249’s performance under different operational conditions. The helicopter is designed to meet NATO standards and is expected to offer interoperability with allied forces.

The AW249 represents a critical upgrade for Italy’s defence aviation capabilities, reinforcing its ability to conduct modern combat operations. With its enhanced firepower, improved survivability, and digital systems, the helicopter will play a key role in the country’s future military operations.

Italy’s decision to invest in the AW249 aligns with its broader defence modernisation strategy, ensuring that its armed forces remain well-equipped to handle contemporary and future threats.
