Japan Acquires Nine KC-46A Tanker Aircraft

The U.S. has approved a potential $4.1 billion Foreign Military Sales (FMS) to Japan for up to nine Boeing KC-46A Pegasus aerial refuelling aircraft.

The planned sale includes additional support equipment, such as Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) Guardian Laser Turret Sets (GLTAs), AN/ALR-69A Radar Warning Receivers (RWRs), and 18 Pratt & Whitney PW4062 turbofan engines.

The Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) has used Boeing tankers, receiving four first-generation KC-767 tankers between 2008 and 2010. In 2021, Japan became the first non-US operator of the KC-46A.

The four aircraft are planned to be delivered by 2024. The notification did not say when the new aircraft will be delivered.
