Turkish Defence Ministry Company MKE shared its new sniper rifle, MKE-408, chambered in .408 CheyTac (10.36x77 mm) ammunition for engagements at extended ranges on social media.
MKE-408 marks the first Turkish sniper rifle chambered in .408 CheyTac ammunition specialized for long-range shooting. The ammunition is well known for its use on CheyTac's M200 Intervention sniper rifle.
The design appears to be based on a KN-12 multi-calibre sniper rifle with different proportions for a much larger round than even.338 Lapua Magnum. Thanks to the ammunition, the MKE-408 has an effective range of 2200 m.
.408 CheyTac ammunition is between the mainstream sniper rifle ammunition types .338 Lapua (8.6x70 mm) and .50 BMG (12.7x99 mm) in terms of power. It is also the better of the two for long-range use thanks to its high muzzle velocity (which varies between 910 m/s and 1100 m/s depending on ammunition type) and high ballistic coefficients through form optimization.
It is unknown if MKE will start producing the ammunition, but it is likely considering the presence of a few providers worldwide.
