Otokar [BIST: OTKAR] participated in the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2026 exhibition, held on April 20–23 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of its efforts to expand its presence in the Asia-Pacific market.
At the event, hosted at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) under the auspices of the Malaysian Ministry of Defence, the company displayed two of its armoured platforms: the COBRA II 4x4 tactical wheeled armoured vehicle in a right-hand drive configuration and the ARMA 6x6 armoured combat vehicle.
Otokar’s presence reflected a broader demand shift in the region. Across Southeast Asia, defence procurement is increasingly shaped by internal security challenges, border protection requirements and low-intensity conflict environments rather than large-scale conventional warfare. Countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia are prioritising mobility, survivability and rapid deployment over heavy platforms, particularly in complex terrain ranging from dense urban areas to jungle and coastal environments.
This demand profile favours light and medium-weight armoured vehicles with strong protection against mines and improvised explosive devices, high manoeuvrability and modular mission capability. Budget constraints and the need for rapid procurement cycles are also pushing buyers toward cost-effective and flexible suppliers, while localisation and industrial partnership requirements are becoming a standard condition in many programmes. In this context, Otokar’s existing cooperation with Malaysia-based Boustead Holdings Berhad provides a potential pathway for localisation and industrial collaboration in the country.
Within this context, the COBRA II platform aligns closely with regional operational needs. Designed for missions such as border security, internal security and peacekeeping, the vehicle offers ballistic, mine and improvised explosive device protection combined with high mobility. Its modular structure allows configuration for multiple roles, including personnel transport, command and control, reconnaissance and ambulance variants, making it suitable for the multi-role requirements seen across the region.
The ARMA 6x6 armoured combat vehicle targets a complementary segment, offering higher payload capacity and the ability to integrate medium- and high-calibre weapon systems while retaining mobility. This positions the platform for forces seeking to upgrade legacy fleets with more capable yet still deployable systems.
The company operates a fleet of more than 33,000 military vehicles across approximately 50 countries, serving over 80 end users. In the Asia-Pacific market, however, competition remains strong, with established suppliers from Republic of Korea, China and Europe competing across different capability and price segments.
