ROK to Cooperate with UAE for KF-21 and Cheongung-II TurDef

The Korea Times says the Republic of Korea and the UAE are strengthening defence links with an eye on the Cheongung-II missile systems and KF-21 Boramae fighter.
Focussing on aerospace and air defence, especially the KF-21 Boramae fighter jet and the Cheongung-II medium-range surface-to-air missile system, Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have stepped up bilateral defence collaboration. The Korea Times announced the most recent progress on 15 April 2025 after a high-level conference between the air force commanders of the two nations.

UAE interest in KF-21 gains momentum

UAE Air Force and Air Defence Commander Major General Rashed Mohammed Al Shamsi visited General Lee Young-su, Chief of Staff of the Republic of Korea Air Force, at the Air Force Headquarters in Gyeryong during an official visit to ROK. The discussion covered possibilities for improved interoperability and expanded strategic partnership.
A major issue was whether the UAE will participate in the KF-21, Republic of Korea's next-generation fighter programme. General Al Shamsi, The Korea Times claims, showed great interest in the KF-21's export potential and technological possibilities.

Cheongung-II missile system integration discussed

The Cheongung-II system, which the UAE contracted to purchase in 2022 in one of ROK’s largest defence export deals, was another prominent topic. Discussions included operational integration, training support, and long-term maintenance cooperation.

General Lee underlined the aim of establishing a “long-term strategic partnership” in aerospace and missile defence. Both commanders agreed to maintain regular dialogue and conduct joint training to strengthen interoperability.

Seoul targets Gulf market with defence exports

The paper said the gathering fits Korea's larger goal to increase its defence export footprint in the Gulf area. The KF-21 would be a reasonable substitute given the UAE's F-35 plane acquisition delays. Mass manufacturing is planned to start in 2026 and test flights of the aircraft are still running.
