Rostec Unveils ZAK-30 Citadel 30 mm Airburst C-UAS System TurDef

Rostec will display its ZAK-30 C-UAS system using airburst rounds during the first International Security Forum to be held in Russia between May 26 and 29.

Russia is fleshing out its recent investment into airburst ammunition-based C-UAS systems with ZAK-30 Citadel to be displayed at the first International Security Forum.

ZAK-30 Citadel is described as a networked system where sensors (Day cameras, IR cameras, radars) and the effectors are remotely connected. The effector of the ZAK-30 is a turret armed with a dual-feed autocannon (Likely 2A72 derivative) that can use airburst ammunition, which are timed upon exiting the barrel.

Russia, not long ago, utilised airburst ammunition (Not to be confused with airburst, which is preset to detonate at a defined time) from a Ka-52 attack helicopter to shoot down a Ukrainian UAV, which could be taken as a field trial of the ammunition for ZAK-30.

The performance of sensors in terms of detecting small UAVs remains to be seen. While Russia is not exactly cutting-edge when it comes to electronics, the feedback from the field might provide advantages in optimisation.
