Second TB3’s Prototype Makes Maiden Flight

Baykar has announced the maiden flight of Bayraktar TB3 UCAV’s second prototype, marking the 24th test flight in total. The firm has achieved the altitude and endurance goals with the prototype throughout 23 flight tests. Some of the milestones with the prototype include: • Flying under strong winds • Flying for 32 hours and travelling 5700 km distance • Reaching 30000 ft altitude • Integration of ASELSAN’s CATS electro-optical system The second prototype might be the point where munition tests will be conducted, as well as other payloads such as ASELFLIR-500, the successor of the CATS electro-optical system. In addition to payloads, flight tests before take-off from TCG ANADOLU (L 400) might also begin with the second prototype, which will likely have tweaks compared to the first one. Bayraktar TB3 is set to primarily operate from the Turkish Navy’s TCG ANADOLU (L 400) to perform ISR and strike missions. Sensors such as sonobuoys and multi-purpose AESA radar will also be integrated to expand the array of missions. The folding wings allow for easier carriage inside the hangar and on the deck, especially for LHD-type ships, which have significantly smaller aircraft hangars than aircraft carriers. Bayraktar TB3’s long range and endurance can allow reconnaissance and small-scale attacks away from threats such as coastal defence systems or maritime patrol aircraft posing threats against the leading platform. This is especially important for landing scenarios where having intelligence about the operation area contributes to more refined planning.
