Türkiye Advances ALTAY Programme with BATU Engine Milestone TurDef

Türkiye has reached a technical milestone in the ALTAY main battle tank programme with the completion of factory acceptance tests for the indigenous BATU engine.

BATU is a 27.3-litre V12 diesel engine designed to deliver high torque under demanding battlefield conditions, including sustained operation in extreme temperatures and harsh environments.

Attention now turns to the qualification and validation of the transmission system, a critical phase that will determine overall drivetrain performance and reliability. Engine–transmission integration remains one of the most complex aspects of modern main battle tank development and is essential before the system can be cleared for serial production.

The BATU achievement is one of the most sensitive parts of the ALTAY program, which has had problems with propulsion systems that come from other countries. But ultimate operational preparedness will depend on successful integration testing, long-term endurance trials, and testing in real-world settings.

The next step for BATU-powered ALTAY is start the serial production phase. This will help Türkiye achieve its goal of keeping a supply chain of armoured vehicles that is backed by the country itself while also making it less vulnerable to limitations from other sources.
