Airbus and Navantia have reached an agreement to investigate the integration of SIRTAP UAVs aboard the Spanish Navy’s Juan Carlos I multi-purpose LHD vessel.
Following the deployment of Turkish TB3 UAVs on TCG Anadolu (L400), Spain showcased its interest in the same capacity. Spain’s interest is not unexpected, as the TCG Anadolu has been developed based on Juan Carlos I. The main difference between the two vessels is related to the flight deck. TCG Anadolu has a ski jump, facilitating take-off at lower speeds, while the Spanish vessel’s flight deck is flat.
Airbus and Navantia want to take the first step towards ensuring SIRTAP interoperability with the rest of the carrier’s systems, including the SCOMBA combat system. Integration initiatives will centre on the following pillars: Command and Control (C2), Combat system integration and Navigation support (including take-off and landing operations).

This collaborative endeavour aims to create a fully integrated system that ensures compatibility between SIRTAP and the Juan Carlos I carrier. This arrangement could pave the way for the Spanish Navy to create additional capabilities in Spain, bolstering the national industry and enhancing Spain’s strategic sovereignty.

The wing structure of this Airbus UAV is similar to that of the TB3. Therefore, the UAV might fly with ISR payload in long endurance for patrol missions.
