Navantia and Lockheed Martin have demonstrated the first live track for Spain’s F-110 Multi-Mission Frigate’s AN/SPY-7(V)2 multi-function S-band radar.
The tracking test was conducted at Lockheed Martin’s Aegis SCOMBA Integration Center (ASIC) in Moorestown, New Jersey.
SPY-7 radar’s hardware and software tracked airborne objects to validate readiness.
Lockheed Martin will conduct thorough testing of all components of the SPY-7 radar and AEGIS combat system for Spain’s future frigates. Formal delivery of the SPY-7 radar is scheduled for 2026.
The F-110 frigate is scheduled to join the Spanish Navy’s fleet, with the first two ships currently under construction. The ships will serve as ASW frigates alongside the F-100 (Alvaro de Bazan-class) frigates, focused on air defence and armed with 48 Mk41 VLS cells.
The SPY-7(V)2 radar for F-110 is an S-band radar with long-range search and tracking capabilities for ESSM and SM-2 missiles. The radar will also be used on Canadian Surface Combatant (Type 26 derivative) frigates. Due to newer technologies, the radar offers higher size/performance than the older SPY-1 radar used on various AEGIS-equipped destroyers.
