ASELSAN Konya Tests AKONS Smart Sight System on JNG-90 TurDef

ASELSAN’s subsidiary focused on fire control systems, has tested the AKONS smart sight system on a MKE JNG-90 sniper rifle against a static and UAV target.

The test video of AKONS includes the smart sight system’s automatic target finding, hit zone designation, and electronic safety demonstrated on the JNG-90 sniper rifle in use by the Turkish Army.

Against a static target representing a human, AKONS drew a target box and marked lethal areas of aim after locking on. This function can allow not only swifter kill shots but also less-lethal shots, depending on the situation; the latter applies especially for law enforcement use.

Additionally, the electronic safety mechanism prevents the user from shooting if the weapon is not aimed at the designated target to reduce ammo waste or friendly fire.

For use against UAVs, the sight system draws an ellipse to indicate where to aim, which might change depending on the UAV's position and rotation, as it only covers the main structural frame. Similar tests are being conducted by the U.S. with service rifles to explore the feasibility of countering UAVs at the infantry level with a similar SMASH system, in addition to buckshot-like ammunition for existing small arms.

Smart sight systems combining different components like electro-optics, image processing algorithms, safety mechanisms, and laser rangefinders can not only make the engagements swifter and more accurate but also allow engagements that would normally be too complicated, like shooting down UAVs.
