BAE Systems has built its own “big” unmanned submarine

BAE Systems developed a new large-scale autonomous unmanned submarine (XLUUV), Herne, designed for military use.
Herne was built in collaboration with Canada’s Cellula Robotics and is configured for undersea infrastructure protection, anti-submarine warfare support, intelligence-gathering, reconnaissance and surveillance missions. It can be carried by ship to launch, while its modular design allows for flexibility in carrying (and removable) equipment. Under development is the ability to carry and launch a torpedo in a second year.
BAE Systems hopes Herne could be in production in a year and a half.
