Fincantieri has delivered Atlante, the second Logistic Support Ship (LSS) built for the Italian Navy, further reinforcing the service’s ability to sustain long-duration naval operations. The vessel was constructed at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard as part of a fleet renewal programme managed under OCCAR.
Atlante follows the earlier delivery of Vulcano. Together, the two ships form the backbone of the Italian Navy’s modern naval logistics capability, enabling extended operations at sea and strengthening Italy’s contribution to national, NATO and multinational maritime missions.
From a technical perspective, Atlante has a gross tonnage of approximately 27,000 tons, a length of 193 metres and a maximum speed of around 20 knots. The vessel can accommodate up to 235 crew members and specialists and is equipped to support both military and humanitarian missions.
The ship is designed to transfer liquid and solid cargo to other naval units, conduct repairs and maintenance at sea, and support rescue operations using helicopters and special-purpose vessels. Beyond traditional replenishment roles, Atlante is also capable of recovering vehicles and materials from both the surface and the seabed.
In addition, the platform can serve as a base for intelligence- and electronic warfare-related activities, underlining its multi-role character. With the delivery of Atlante, Fincantieri has added another high-value auxiliary vessel to the Italian Navy’s fleet, further enhancing its capacity to conduct complex and sustained maritime operations.
