Fincantieri Delivers Tenth FREMM Frigate to the Italian Navy TurDef

Fincantieri announced that the tenth FREMM frigate, and the second in GP-e configuration, Emilio Bianchi (F-589) has been delivered to the Italian Navy.

The delivery of the Emilio Bianchi frigate, fitted with capabilities from both the GP (General Purpose) and ASW configurations under the roof of the GP-e configuration, marks the beginning of the transition to the FREMM EVO frigates to offer more firepower and sensory capabilities.

Emilio Bianchi and Spartaco Schergat (F-598) are the two FREMM GP-e frigates as the interim phase towards FREMM EVO.

FREMM GP-e combines GP capabilities with the CAPTAS-4 towed sonar array for improved anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Two FREMM EVO frigates set for delivery in 2029 and 2030 will have the rotating Kronos Grand Naval C-band radar with a four-Kronos Dual Band radar suite consisting of fixed C-band and X-band radars for enhanced search and tracking for a wide range of targets. Additionally, EVO configuration adds a 16-set of Sylver A70 VLS for MdCN land attack cruise missiles and Aster 30 Block 1NT long-range air defence missiles.
