Germany and Norway will unite their submarine maintenance facility at the Haakonsvern naval base near Bergen on Norway's southwestern coast.
Norwegian Minister of Defence Bjoern Arild Gramme and German Minister Boris Pistorius met at the Haakonsvern naval station to establish a German-Norwegian submarine maintenance facility.
In 2021, the two NATO allies signed a contract to purchase six submarines from the German company ThyssenKruppmarineSystems. The initiative aims to provide a unified design for the two countries' submarines.
According to the German military procurement agency, the new submarine class demonstrated technological development and that tight cooperation with Norway will result in logistical and refitting efficiencies.
According to the statement, this would boost the operational availability of the "strategic weapons system" and reduce expenses. The statement also emphasised the new submarines' increased range and anti-reconnaissance capabilities.
The German Defence Ministry has ordered two of the new submarines and expects to acquire four more for a total cost of about $4.2 billion.
