Germany Funds NOMADS Acquisition for Ukrainian Air Defence TurDef

Germany has funded the acquisition of NOMADS short-range air defence systems using AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles for defence against cruise missiles and UAVs.

German Aid to Ukraine, a page focused on updates regarding Germany’s aid to Ukraine, reported that Germany is funding Ukraine’s acquisition of NOMADS mobile short-range air defence systems, primarily to protect against cruise missiles and kamikaze UAVs.

Germany similarly funded the supply of its Skyranger 35 SPAAGs to Ukraine, which outperform the existing Gepard SPAAGs thanks to the use of AHEAD airburst ammunition when it comes to countering UAVs.

NOMADS is a Norwegian mobile short-range air defence system with emphasis on standalone operation. The system, based on FFG’s ACSV tracked armoured vehicle, carries four AIM-9X Sidewinder or IRIS-T SLS missiles using an IIR seeker, capable of reaching 10+ km in range.

Onboard Giraffe 1X short-range searching radar and EO/IR allow NOMADS to operate standalone or in conjunction with other NATO-standard air defence systems.
