Greek MEKO-200 Frigates Set to Receive Sovraponte 76 mm Gun TurDef MEKO200-HN and Sovraponte Naval Gun to Replace Phalanx CIWS

Hellenic Navy’s upgraded Hydra-class (MEKO-200HN) frigates are set to receiveLeonardo’ss Sovraponte 76 mm compact naval gun in place of the aft Phalanx CIWS.

Another change to come with the MEKO-200HN modernisation package for the Hellenic Navy is the replacement of the aft Phalanx CIWS with Leonardo’s new Sovraponte 76 mm naval gun, according to Greece-based OnAlert's report.

Compared to Phalanx CIWS using an M61A2 20 mm rotary cannon, Sovraponte’s 76 mm gun offers longer range and more versatility, especially when used with Leonardo’s guided DART (Anti-Air) and VULCANO (Anti-Surface) ammunition.

Another thing to note is the fact that the Hellenic Navy is looking for C-UAS enhancements for the MEKO-200HN frigates, with one consideration being the installation of passive sensors and jammers. Sovraponte is a part of the efforts to provide C-UAS capabilities as the APDS ammunition of Phalanx and the high ammunition consumption rate are not exactly ideal for defence against UAVs. On the other hand, proximity fuse ammunition or the more advanced DART rounds offer better performance in this department due to increased probability of hit.

Whereas Super Rapid and STRALES 76 mm naval gun mounts require deck penetration due to the magazine layout, Sovraponte storing its ammunition inside the turret is less demanding in terms of integration. Thus, it can be placed not only on the bow but also above occupied areas like helicopter hangars or the sides of the superstructure.
