India's Second Nuclear-Powered Submarine Enters Service

On August 29, India announced that its second Arihant-class nuclear-powered indigenous ballistic missile submarine, INS 'Arighaat, has entered service. 

The construction of INS 'Arighaat started in 2009, and the submarine was launched in 2017. The first submarine, INS Arihant construction, started in 2004 and fired a ballistic missile for the first time in October 2022. India will get four class submarines, with the last two entering service in 2025. 

The first two submarines have a displacement of 6,000 tonnes, 111 meters long and 11 meters wide, while the other two have a displacement of 7,000 tonnes, 130 meters long and 15 meters wide. They reach a maximum speed of 24 knots submersed and 15 knots on the sea surface. The armament of the first two submarines includes 12 K-15 ballistic missiles with a maximum range of 1,500 km or four K-4 ballistic missiles with a maximum range of 3,500 km. 

The third and fourth submarines incorporate 24 K-15, 8 K-4 or eight K-5 ballistic missiles with a maximum range of 5-6,000 kilometres. In addition, all submarines also incorporate six 533 mm torpedo tubes.
