Indian Navy Gets third Scorpene-Class Submarine

The Kalvari-class diesel-electric (Scorpene-Class) submarine INS Karanj was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Mumbai on Wednesday in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired) VS Shekhawat. This is the third in the series of six submarines. Kalvari-class submarines are being constructed by public sector shipbuilder Mazagon Dock Ltd (MDL).

Addressing the event in Mumbai, Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh said, "Indian Navy has been a strong proponent of indigenization and self-reliance in defence over past seven decades. At present, out of 42 ships and submarines on order, 40 are being constructed in Indian shipyards."

As per the contract with a French company, they would teach MDL and transfer the technology to India so it can make these ships indigenously. Two submarines of the project namely INS Kalvari and Khanderi have been commissioned in Dec 2017 and Sep 2019 respectively. Scorpene is designed by Naval Group for the export market.

The navy aims to commission the remaining three submarines as scheduled.
