Iran Announces the Death of President Raisi

Iran’s President Raisi and Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian died in a helicopter crash, state media confirms. Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others died in a helicopter crash, Iranian news outlets have reported. The bodies of those slain in Iran’s president’s helicopter crash will be transferred to Tabriz, the head of the Iranian Red Crescent stated, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News. According to the Iranian state news agency IRNA, Iran’s leadership held an “urgent meeting” on Monday. Raisi was the second-most powerful figure in the Islamic Republic’s political hierarchy, following Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khomeini. According to Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution, if the president dies, the first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, will take over with the approval of the Supreme Leader. A council consisting of the first vice president, the parliament speaker, and the judiciary head must organise a new president’s election within 50 days. The 63-year-old, who represents conservative and hardline forces in Iranian politics, was president for nearly three years and appeared to be on course for re-election next year. Like other senior Iranian leaders, he saved his toughest vitriol for Israel and the United States.
