Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) launched on November 28, 2024 the first Landing Support Vessel (LSV) built by Naikai Zosen Corporation.
The 120-meter-long vessel has a displacement of 3,500 tons and a top speed of 15 knots (28 km/h). It can transport over 1,500 tons of cargo, including dozens of vehicles or standard 20-foot containers.
With a construction cost of approximately ¥5.4 billion ($35.7 million), the vessel is designed for strategic deployments, particularly in Japan's southwestern Nansei Islands. Distinct from previously launched vessels like the Nihonbare (Landing Craft Utility), the Yoko lacks direct beaching capability but compensates with superior cargo capacity and retractable rampways, enabling loading and unloading at ports. This capability aligns with Japan's ongoing efforts to reinforce its transportation and rapid deployment capabilities in remote island regions.
