Malaysia highlights MPMS-2 ship built by Türkiye’s Desan

Malaysia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs posted an infographic on its social media channels highlighting the Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS-2)  that will be constructed by Desan Shipyard for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

In the accompanying Malay-language post, the ministry described the MPMS-2 as a strategic asset valued at approximately RM350 million (US$83.75 million), intended to bolster national waters security. The ministry underlined that the vessel is designed for long-range operations, maritime surveillance, and enforcement, particularly in the South China Sea. The emphasis on Malaysia’s maritime law enforcement and internal security responsibilities is not a coincidence, considering the strategic importance of maritime safety and increasing tension in the region.

According to the infographic, the MPMS-2 will measure 99 metres in length with a beam of 17 metres, providing stability for open-sea operations. The vessel is expected to reach speeds of over 20 knots and sustain up to 30 days of continuous operation at sea without resupply, supporting extended missions far from shore.

The ship will accommodate 100 personnel, comprising 70 permanent crew members and an additional 30 mission-specific personnel. It will also feature detention facilities for up to 45 persons, reinforcing its role in maritime law enforcement and security operations.

In terms of operational assets, the MPMS-2 will be equipped with a helicopter deck, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system, and four Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC). Mission support facilities will include a mini hospital and weapon systems configured in line with operational requirements.

Desan Shipyard is familiar with Malaysia. The Shipyard has started the construction of the first MPMS for the MMEA in 2025 and is still ongoing. The publication of the MPMS-2 infographic confirms that Desan will construct the second ship of the same class and capability framework.

The timing of the disclosure follows Anwar Ibrahim’s recent visit to Türkiye as a guest of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
