Moroccan intelligence agency and the Niger government have started negotiating about releasing former President Mohamed Bazoum.
Africa Intelligence reports that the talks for releasing Bazoum’s detainment by the military coup established following the 2023 coup started this September.
Following the coup, France resisted the military regime but left the country peacefully. It developed its already existing relations with ECOWAS. ECOWAS is an organisation of West African countries aiming for an economic union with Europe, especially France.
Ex-ECOWAS members Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have recently formed a new alliance named Alliance of Sahel States (ASS). This alliance proposes economic (Including the proposal of a new currency) and military cooperation.
The coup’s openness to discussing releasing the overthrown pro-ECOWAS president signals a way forward for resolving internal matters and easing tensions in the region. Morocco considers good relations with France as “vital”.
