The Norwegian Navy has added two more submarines to its order for Type 212CD AIP submarines from German shipbuilder TKMS, increasing the total count to six.
TKMS announced the expansion of the contract with Norway for Type 212CD (Type 212NG) submarines to six hulls. Norway is acquiring the new variant of Type 212 jointly with Germany, which will acquire six submarines.
Compared to baseline Type 212, Type 212CD offers an increase in size and firepower with eight 533 mm torpedo tubes, which can launch CHWT heavyweight torpedoes and the multi-purpose fibre-optic guided IDAS missile (Quad-packed).
Due to its larger size, Type 212CD also supports a longer range and endurance compared to the first iteration of Type 212.
The AIP system providing low noise signature and efficient undersea cruise and hull with magnetic/acoustic optimisations are the other important features of Type 212CD.
