Norway is focused on participating in an active production frigate program to minimize the need to upgrade the Fridtjof Nansen class.
Norway has officially listed four countries it will consider as options to support a future “strategic” frigate partnership. France, Germany, the UK and the US are expected to receive invitations to begin discussions on the matter, the Norwegian Defence Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
While Norway’s statement does not say which projects are under discussion, it is speculated that the options are for the French FDI frigate, the German F126, the Type 26/City class and/or the U.S. Constellation class.
A strategic partner for the effort is expected to be chosen by 2025. Five to six new frigates could be ordered to meet Norway’s long-term defence plan requirement. The future ships will also be capable of carrying anti-submarine helicopters.
