ROKETSAN and Altınay Defence Technologies signed a lithium-based battery supply agreement under the AKYA heavyweight torpedo programme, marking a new cooperation step within Türkiye’s defence industrial ecosystem.
Under the agreement signed during SAHA 2026, Altınay Defence will undertake serial production of high-power, high-energy-density lithium-based battery systems for the AKYA heavyweight torpedo.
Developed with national resources for the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces, the AKYA heavyweight torpedo is designed for submarine platforms and represents one of Türkiye’s key indigenous underwater strike systems.
According to the companies, the battery system was developed to meet the demanding operational requirements of heavyweight torpedoes operating under harsh maritime conditions. Lithium-based battery systems offer higher energy density compared to conventional solutions, supporting longer endurance, improved energy management and sustained high-performance operation during underwater missions.
The system is intended to support the torpedo’s speed and manoeuvrability through high power density while improving mission endurance and operational efficiency.
ROKETSAN Deputy General Manager Halid Bulut said the company continues to prioritise the highest possible level of localisation in systems delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces, describing AKYA as one of the Turkish Navy’s critical underwater strike systems supporting Türkiye’s maritime interests.
Altınay Defence General Manager Z. Burak Mercan stated that the company aims to contribute engineering capabilities to strategic defence programmes while supporting indigenous technology development within Türkiye’s defence industry ecosystem.
The agreement is expected to strengthen domestic capability in critical subsystems for naval weapon systems while expanding the role of local suppliers in Türkiye’s underwater warfare programmes.
