Saudi Arabia has received the first of seven AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile detection air defence radars to be used in the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence System (THAAD), which it ordered as part of a $2.3 billion deal with the US.
This is the first AN/TPY-2 radar with a complete Gallium Nitride, or GaN, populated array in the system. In addition to this first radar, Saudi Arabia will receive six more radars. According to the signed contract,
RTX will also provide a Main Power Unit and five years of maintenance service for the radars. The agreement also includes the supply of 44 THAAD Launchers, 360 THAAD missiles, and 16 fire control and communication units. It is known that AN/TPY-2 radars can detect, track and discriminate ballistic missiles in multiple phases of flight.
