Fifth I-class frigate and the first in the additional batch, TCG Akdeniz (F-519), built under the partnership of STM and TAIS Shipyards, has met the sea.
The first from the additional batch of MİLGEM I-class frigates, TCG Akdeniz, has been launched at Anadolu Shipyard. Like the second to fourth ships, TCG Akdeniz also has a longitudally extended housing for MİLDAS VLS.
The additional batch of I-class frigates consists of another four ships, which has raised the total number of I-class frigates to be operated by the Turkish Navy to eight.
The second I-class frigate, TCG İzmit (F-516), is expected to be delivered in 2026.
Export Debut with Indonesia
The Indonesian Navy has become the first export customer of the I-class frigate, with an order for two ships announced during IDEF2025. An MoU was signed between Qatari Barzan Holdings and TAIS Shipyards as a part of the export of the two frigates. TurDef previously learned that a royalty fee will be paid due to the Design Project Office’s ownership of the design rights.
