With its recently modernised submarine rescue chamber, the Turkish Navy’s TCG Alemdar (A-582) submarine rescue ship has joined the DYNAMIC MONARCH-24 exercise.
Turkish MoD announced TCG Alemdar’s participation in Norway, stating that 28 personnel from five countries joining the exercise visited the ship and received a briefing on its capabilities.
In DYNAMIC MONARCH-24, TCG Alemdar’s submarine rescue capabilities will be demonstrated in seas with lower salt saturation than the Turkish seas. The lower salt saturation results in lower water density, reducing the lift. The reduced lift from water can make submarine rescue operations harder because of greater effort requirements. Such rescue ships are expected to perform their mission globally.
The ship previously attended NATO’s DYNAMIC MONARCH-21 / national KURTARAN-21 exercises in Aksaz. TCG Alemdar’s submarine rescue chamber received maintenance and modernisation at Istanbul Shipyard Command. In April 2024, it was tested at the KURTARAN 24 drill in Aksaz.
TCG Alemdar entered Turkish Navy service in 2017. The ship can rescue submarine personnel at depths of up to 600 m, perform undersea repairs, and move wreckage.
Submarine rescue ships are important as the second chance for submarine crews against accidents or the loss of a submarine if the vessel loses its capacity to reach the surface.
