The FY2026 budget for the U.S. Navy includes funding for the development of a containerised launcher for Mk48 heavyweight torpedoes intended for USVs.
A budget of $50 million has been allocated for a containerised launcher to launch not missiles but the widely used Mk48 533 mm heavyweight torpedoes from USVs or suitable vessels. Naval News reported that the launcher to use the Mk48 Mod 7 torpedoes is titled “Liberator” in the budget document.
As to what USVs in development are suitable, MUSVs capable of carrying containers on their payload beds, which are close to the waterline, are highly likely. The only sensible way to launch the heavyweight torpedoes from a container would be by releasing them backwards, as it is not possible to launch them forward like a submarine can.
Considering the large explosive payload and the way of impact, heavyweight torpedoes pose a significant threat to unsuspecting warships and submarines.
While engaging ships with manned boats fitted with heavyweight torpedoes is something not so preferable due to close proximity, USVs, not having a crew, give more luxury for such risky approaches.
Mk48 Mod 7
Mk48 Mod 7 is the latest in-service variant of the long-serving Mk48 heavyweight torpedo, introducing important guidance upgrades. The onboard sonar can work in active and passive modes, and a wire is present as an alternative way of guidance. The torpedo carrying a 292 kg warhead can reach a range of 50 km.
