TÜBİTAK BİLGEM Develops Communication Buoys for Submarines TurDef

TÜBİTAK BİLGEM is developing AUAG, a submarine-launched buoy to establish communication with other units above the surface without needing onboard antennas.

AUAG, standing for Acoustic Satellite Network Gateway in Turkish (Akustik Uydu Ağ Geçidi), will allow submarines to stay connected to the surface and above without having to deploy antennas that can compromise their natural stealthiness.

TÜBİTAK BİLGEM’s rapidly deployable communication system for submarines can be launched from four-inch pressure-based launchers and allow communication with satellites.

L3Harris from the US is known to be developing a similar system, CUUUWi, Communication Using Underwater Ultrasonic Wireless (CUUUWi). CUUUWi can transmit voice and text data at ranges up to 10 km to submarines as well as rich data at ranges up to 100 m.
